Lotus Temple Dome FRIDAY 4:30PM to 6:30PM Feminism in the Islamic World |
Come join Amina Christi as she shares her first hand experience of living in a Muslim world. Initiated as the first woman tabla disciple of the Qawwali genre, her story reveals the present day Feminism of Islam. Learn the history and power of Islamic women dating back to the time of Muhammad and how the respect of the feminine has changed since those early days. She will share her experience about the evolution and deep call to restore the balance of the feminine in Islamic culture through her example of being the only woman with permission in history to perform the sacred Qawwali music in Pakistan, India and America. Amina will also teach the language of the tabla and how to formulate your own rhythm cycles.
Amina Christi is the first woman to be allowed to perform at the largest Qawwali gatherings in the world, where women have been forbidden for over 1,000 years. Being the first foreigner and female disciple initiated formally under the legendary Ustad Hajji Dildar Hussein Khan, (tabla nawaz for Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) Amina has been supported by the cultural love of Qawwali to share the message of Islam through this ancient Sufi music.
